The season of Lent has traditionally been set apart by much of the Christian community as a time of reflection, repentance (changing our ways), and renewal. The forty days of Lent (excluding Sundays which are always a celebration of Jesus’s resurrection) mirror forty years of wilderness wandering for the people of Israel and the forty days Jesus endured in the wilderness after his baptism. You are invited to take part in one or more of these opportunities and experience a meaningful season of Lent.
Walk with Jesus
Sunday & Holy Week Worship
On Sundays at 9:00 and 10:30 a.m., we will come together in community (in-person and on-line) to hear stories from Jesus’ life and journey to the cross, to reflect on our own journeys and to remember we belong to Jesus in the bread and wine of communion.
The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and leads up to Holy Week and Easter:
- Ash Wednesday, February 14 – Worship at noon and 7:00 p.m.
- Maundy Thursday, March 28 – Worship at 7:00 p.m.
- Good Friday, March 29 – Worship at 7:00 p.m.
- Easter Sunday, March 31 – Worship at 8:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 11:00 a.m.
Engage in Faith Practices
This Lent is a chance to engage in a meaningful walk with Jesus by exploring classic spiritual disciplines used for centuries in the Christian tradition. Spiritual disciplines are activities undertaken through our own power that open us to power beyond our own – the power of God’s Spirit.
Each week we will focus on an outward spiritual discipline of engagement: submission, worship, celebration, service, community and study. These disciplines are the ones through which we actively engage our lives with God, one another, and the world. Our hope is that the daily immersion in the life of God through these disciplines becomes a life-giving habit that extends well beyond this season of Lent.
Engage: Wednesday Evening Worship
Worship will be available every Wednesday evening in Lent at 7:00 p.m. Each week will focus on one of the spiritual practices of engagement: submission (Ash Wednesday), worship (February 21), celebration (February 28), service (March 6), community (March 13) and study (March 20).
Check out recordings of past worship services at: Worship at Incarnation.
Engage: Wednesday Noon Bible Study
On Wednesdays at noon, join Pastor Joel Vander Wal to study a Biblical text or story related to the spiritual practice for that week and to talk about how to use the practice. This Bible study starts on Wednesday, February 21 (the week after Ash Wednesday) and continues to March 20. No need to register. Attend one or all the sessions. Each Wednesday is a chance to take a closer look at the faith practice that is the focus for worship that evening. Bring a bag lunch (optional).
Every Wednesday, 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m., from February 21 to March 20 in the Fireside Room at Incarnation
Engage: Devotions – Individually and/or with Others
You can also use Engage: A Lenten Guide for Spiritual Growth for devotions on your own or with others. Engage was written by Pastor Kai Nilsen and others through the Renovare‘ Institute. This daily guide follows the weekly themes in Wednesday night worship and is available to download at: https://renovare.org/books/engage.
Engage: Small Groups
New small groups are also a chance to talk about each spiritual practice with others and, together as a group, figure out how to apply this practice in your life. You can try out a few practices during the season and hear from others about their experiences. The groups will use a faith study based on Engage, a Lent devotional written by Pastor Kai Nilsen and others in the Renovare‘ Institute. The groups will be easy to do, meeting just 4-5 times during Lent. Small groups are a great way to connect with other people, while diving deeper into the spiritual practices.
