Travel in the Steps of Paul - October 6-17

Travel to Turkey and Greece in the steps of Paul, October 6-17, 2012.  The Apostle Paul traveled great distances to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.  During his four missionary journeys he spent time in many places in modern day Turkey and Greece which this tour will visit as we retrace some of the stops on Paul's missionary journeys.  The trip begins in Istanbul where travelers will experience Istanbul's past as a capital of the roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires.  A visit to a Christian church is planned to explore how Christianity exists in a primarily Muslim country.  As the group travels down the coast, there will be stops at the ancient ports of Alexandria Troas and Assos, both isited by Paul as described in the book of Acts.  Several of the churches of Revelation such as Pergamon and Sardis are located in this area as well.  One of the highlights of the trip will be a visit to Ephesus, which is one of the most visited ancient sites in the world.

The group ill travel between Turkey and Greece on an Aegean Cruise, which will stop at the island of Patmos, where John reportedly wrote the Book of Revelation, then on to Crete where Paul was shipwrecked and the site of Knossos, a flourishing civilization during the Bronze Age.  The final stop on the cruise will be Santorini - the beautiful white and blue Greek island the appears on so many travel posters.  The final two days of the trip are in Athens and Corinth, two cities on the Greek Peninsula, which figure prominently in Paul's letters.

Beginning in March, travelers will begin meeting for Bible Study and discussion about Acts of the Apostles, the Apostle Paul, his journeys and letters to the Ephesians and Corinthians.  The group will also read selected parts of Revelation and learn a bit of the background of the Churches of Revelation that the group will visit.  The trip is being arranged through Crossing Borders, which is handling all registrations and administrative portions of the trip.  For more information, contact Lynda ThompsonDownload the brochure here.

Here is a sampling of Adult Learning opportunities offered periodically at Incarnation:

Talking Faith Workshop

“Conversations about faith are not just about convincing other people that we are right and they are wrong – that’s a speech, a tirade, an attack. A conversation is about exploration, engagement, and building relationship. When we have a conversation about faith, we discover what we really believe. We find some of what we thought we believed, rings hollow when we say it out loud. We find out that some things we thought don’t matter, are of great interest to others. We find out that people often are yearning for conversation about things that really matter. We find out that we really do have a faith to share….”

These words are found in the introduction of a resource called, Talking Faith, which has used been at Incarnation with great success, and facilitated by Pastor Gary Medin. Dialogue-based gatherings will assist participants in understanding and affirming how their experiences and values have shaped their faith. Through these facilitated conversations, participants will leave each session with a deeper understanding of their faith stories and an appreciation for the faith journey of others. Ultimately, the goal of Talking Faith is to help individuals to embrace their own faith and its origin, and to reinforce that a person’s faith story shared, has the power to encourage others in their faith. This is a completely different orientation some might have that our theology or orthodoxy has to be “right”, before we share our faith.
